DHS Health Science Students Visit HSU School of Nursing Lab Day
Students from the De Leon High School (DHS) Health Science program recently took a major step toward their future medical careers by participating in the Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) School of Nursing Lab Day. This immersive experience provided these aspiring healthcare workers with a firsthand look at the rigorous, hands-on training required in the nursing profession.
Adding to the collaborative spirit of the event, a Comanche County Rural Collaborative (CCRC) student from Gustine joined her De Leon classmates for the lab day. Together, the students represented their communities exceptionally well, stepping out of the traditional high school classroom and into a high-tech university simulation environment.
Hands-On Clinical Experience
During the event, students had the unique opportunity to practice essential clinical skills under the guidance of experienced nursing instructors and university faculty. They moved through various stations designed to replicate real-world medical scenarios.
One of the key focuses of the day was mastering proper infection control and safety protocols. Students practiced the precise methods for donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE)—such as gowns, masks, and hair coverings—which is vital for protecting both patients and healthcare providers in clinical settings.
Interactive Learning and Collaboration
Beyond clinical tasks, the lab day emphasized the importance of teamwork, critical thinking, and medical theory. Students engaged in interactive group activities, mapping out physiological concepts and patient care steps on whiteboards to solve complex nursing case studies.
By working side-by-side with peers from different towns and learning directly from university mentors, these students gained invaluable insight into the nursing path. Events like the HSU School of Nursing Lab Day bridge the gap between high school academics and professional practice, fueling the passion of the next generation of Texas healthcare heroes.
